Forklift Safety Tips & Rules
Each year, there are about 20,000 cases of accidents which are connected to utilizing forklifts in the United States alone. And each and every year about 100 deaths are caused by forklift accidents. Luckily, correct training regarding operation procedures and maintenance could significantly lessen the chance of accidents. The basic safety rules and suggestions below must be followed when operating a forklift.

Training
The employer is responsible for making sure that workers are certified to utilize a forklift and have gone through a proper training program. Training includes a combination of lectures, presentations, practical hands-on training and discussions. Reevaluation should take place every three years. Operators of forklifts should be up-to-date with current forklift safety regulations. Forklift training program content covers dangers of forklift operations, general workplace hazards, workplace surfaces and lighting, and dangers connected to operating the particular forklift which the worker will be using. An employee should be 18 years of age or over to utilize a forklift.

Maintenance
To make sure that the equipment is functioning properly and safely, forklift inspection must be carried out each day. The inspection includes keeping a checklist of things and reporting any problems at once.

The Workplace
Having a clean and safe workplace is essential in the safe operation of a forklift. A safe work site means establishing "traffic lanes" that are designated for forklift use only. Warning systems such as horns and flashing lights must be in place to be able to indicate when there is an approaching forklift. Forklift docking stations must be kept in good repair and inspected on a daily basis.

General Guidelines
Included in the general safety guidelines of utilizing a forklift are avoiding known hazards on the ground, such as oil spills or wet spots; raising or lowering the load only when the forklift is stationary; making sure that there is enough clearance for the load; and keeping arms, legs and hands inside the vehicle while using it.
